Above the prim white blouse
and the navy blue padded shoulders
of your executive suit,
in your eyes, there's a look:
slightly dangerous, almost dirty;
like that parlour,
where the bald man
with a stainless steel ring
hanging between his nostrils
took up the singing needle,
tattooed an image,
something eastern or tribal,
on the small of your back, perhaps.

Derek Adams is a photographer and helps to organise the Essex Poetry Festival. His first collection, Measuring the Volume of an Elephant, is published by Hole Books in Summer 2004.
