Drinking with Ray Carver
He brought the Nyquil.
I brought Listerine.
Tess in the kitchen cooking supper.
We’re telling drinking stories.
Ray tells one.
I tell one
about a crate of Guinness,
three drunk priests
and a Spanish whore.
We’re both smiling.
It almost seems it was worth it,
the crazy stuff, sleeping in ditches,
throwing up in bushes,
hangover pain and shame,
that time I punched the fence
to see if it hurt when I was drunk.
Almost like it was worth it,
with our bellies, hearts warm,
aroma of good food in the air.
