If instead of splitting love’s skin
Like an overripe tomato,

I had smiled when you serenaded,
Sashaed to your swan song,

Seen difference as
Pleasant counterpoint,

And not risen up, cobra-headed,
To snap at your vertebrae

We would no longer be nursing
Wrongs to the same tune,

Feelings falling like lost
Notes off a page.
