Versions and Perversions
So Farewell Then
So farewell then, dear brother,
I have come a long way to get here
through many seas and many places
with foreign faces
and was it worth it after all,
after all the wretched sense of loss
to talk in vain, alas,
to your cremated ghost
at this dumb tomb?
Well, I have shed many a brotherly tear
on this your customary funeral present
and have conversed with somebody who isn’t.
So hail and well met here my long-lost brother.
Hullo forever, brother, and farewell.
