Museum of Haiku Literature Award
Though I’ve often played at being the judge of this Award, I have never yet picked a winner. This time, conscious of real responsibility, I have taken far longer over the choice, and have perhaps for the first time given each haiku the attention it deserves.
I found what I was looking for embedded in Ken Jones’ Haibun, High Water at Dublin Bar. The whole piece is a gem, the prose spare and lucid, relaxed without being sloppy, and importantly it held my interest. The five haiku are clean, perceptive and very satisfying to read aloud.
From lamp to lamp
a rakish fellow
striding forward, falling back
The first Line sketches an urban or suburban landscape, the second populates it - perhaps an amiable, aimless drunk? The third line brings a smile of recognition - this stranger is myself! I know this is a haiku that will come to mind whenever I walk home after dark and will be with me long after many others have been forgotten.
It is good to know that an exotic genre has made itself so very much at home in Dublin.
