Carwasher
Even on rainy days
or in the dark, he’ll call.
In mid-week, when you don’t
need a clean car, he’ll stand
in the doorway with his
tight grin, empty brown eyes.
How’s things? His hand is hard
and heavy for a youngster.
He grips your hand again
before he leaves - Take care.
My wife says get rid of him -
he’s weird. But he works fast
and he’s cheap. I like to
watch his long arms wash
and wipe the car in great sweeps.
Maybe in the winter
I’ll tell him. I’ll say
I’m short of work myself.
