Rain
Everyone’s talking about you,
soft drizzle, or horizontal driven in by gales,
or stair rods, straight down, out of the blue.
In subtle mood, you’re muggy,
down river the city disappears;
at sea, ocean and sky are one.
You are the substance of the tides,
create the oceans that divide our continents,
provide a way for whole cultures to migrate.
You are jazz, rhythm and tempo all your own,
dropped notes upon a window pane that ripple down.
Last night you beat a message on my shelter,
warning, here’s the melted icecap,
here the arctic shelf, here coursing through the culvert;
you rebound off tarmac, bring evening into afternoon,
a sheen to the dullest of dull surfaces,
enrich the colour of soil and stone,
are jewels in the leaf of alchemilla.
