Boys at the Wheel Park
At the wheel park boys execute
their art of lift.
Focus seems complete in them,
without a need for endless words,
faces paused, a studied blank
while bikes, boards, skates
race a slope, take a ramp and spin
to land knife-edged, dynamic limbed.
Their concrete gully hot-coloured
with gaffiti, the loud of tag. Boys
on the cusp, they are
what the agencies describe as ‘youth’.
May their nonchalant grace outlast
hard wiring for risk,
not burn in flight like Icarus,
but ride, and step through gravity
and come down safe. A fall of voice,
a brand new expression.
