Nine to Five on the Shop Floor
We work in silence,
feeding the machines heavy bricks of paper.
It pounds the concrete floor relentlessly,
sending vibrations up through our souls.
Underneath our earmuffs we travel to distant places
where there are no maps.
For me it’s the first line of this page,
but for the guy across from me unloading the machine’s output,
sealed envelopes selling the promise of riches to the already
rich,
it could be anywhere.
What goes on behind the eyes
when the face’s expression is flat, in work mode,
as if in deep meditation?
