Walpole Road
The branches hum...
Confused by things as naïve as a car
ticking at the kerb, or a bumble-bee’s idle curiosity
she stands
still as any living tree
beneath the trees of a suburb she can not fathom
(wondering whose bags these are,
whose broken hands)
*
She holds her breath
while – somewhere on Walpole Rd – berserk,
a baby continues to rattle its cage; the 17:02
heading, through the trees
east, to Waterloo
blissfully, stupidly, shakes itself to death;
leaves leave their twigs; and spiders go to work
on tiptoe, through her groceries
