The man who hailed a taxi and stopped a hearse
So she took all the things he'd,
Mostly, paid for and put them in a cab.
She said she wanted her own
Front door and though she loved him
That was that.
He visited her in her new place,
To fix things up and strip the floor
And worried how alone she seemed
And about the roads and cars and strangers
Outside the door.
One afternoon he just dropped by,
Beneath her window he heard her cries,
Fearful he ran, then stopped and thought.
In that alley he lost his past,
Like a ticket down a drain,
And he felt like a stone, cold
And uncovered by the rain.
He turned and left, he shut the gate,
Out in the street again he made
His first mistake.
