There Also The Invisible Ends Of The Faithful
The path in woods. Water to cross.
The wall, the key, the cup:
stations off insistent pilgrimage
to be witnessed, never touched.
Verboten to the sniffing scavenger -
whom the path will lose
if mistakenly he finds it,
both strutting stream
and wall cold-shoulder,
the key stick in the lock,
the searchlit chalice
never show.
But hinting at wayside death
for iconoclasts -
gone under oakleaves,
in a snarl of rapids,
some cryptic smell
at the wall foot,
clink of a key
on stone flags,
splash of summer blood.
And with no sign
of any tenant;
only somewhere
a sense of hands
that even now
map the next trail,
twist the path subtler,
chill the stream,
confirm the wall,
test the lock,
ring with fresh silver
the unfathomable cup.
